Five Years of NAILA in 2019

NAILA celebrated five years of encouraging and rewarding Indonesian language learning across Australia with its fifth annual Speech Competition. We received high-quality video applications across eight award categories, with particular interest from primary, middle and high school students.

NAILA attracted entrants from all states of Australia, as well as Australian learners of Indonesian language based in Singapore and Indonesia. Participation was particularly high in Victoria, Queensland and South Australia.

Together with our sponsors, the NAILA team developed a range of speech topics tailored to each award category covering aspects of the 2019 theme, “Environment”, encouraging discussion among participants about ways we can conserve the environment and what needs to be done to combat climate change.

Participants relished the opportunity to explore the natural environments of Australia and Indonesia. From engaging with meaningful ideas to demonstrating creative abilities through song and dance, participants demonstrated an exceptional enthusiasm for not only fostering foreign language learning in Australia, but also topical issues like conservation.
