Since then, thanks to his two great teachers (Bu and Pak Blake), he has become more and more interested in Indonesian culture and language, and looks forward to studying Indonesian in Year 11 and 12. Alishba Saeed is a Year 11 student at Darwin High School in the Northern Territory. She has been learning Indonesian for almost two years, in addition to speaking Pashto, Urdu and English. She believes that the Arabic influence on Indonesian language has been extremely advantageous in her learning experience. The similarities between Indonesian culture and her own Pakistani culture have also enabled Alishba to connect with members of Darwin’s Indonesian community in a more meaningful way.

Aside from Indonesian, Alishba enjoys Mathematics and Science at school. She hopes that she can combine her passion for sciences along with her Indonesian language skills to contribute to Indonesian society in the future.

Alishba is grateful for the opportunity to participate in NAILA as it has allowed her to expand her vocabulary, enhance her fluency and research in depth about the less-known Indonesian islands, each with their own unique stories and traditions. Although she has not yet travelled to Indonesia, Alishba now cannot wait to visit!

Daniel has just finished his first year studying a Bachelor of Ministry and Theology at Avondale University. He came in contact with the Indonesian language at an early age through his father who teaches high school Indonesian, but he began to take learning Indonesian seriously in grade 9 as an elective. Daniel has been to Indonesia thrice; once with family, and twice with a school group. Through this, he has made long lasting friendships and wishes to visit Indonesia again in the near future to visit friends, explore parts of Indonesia outside of Bali, and to further immerse himself in the language and culture.

After graduating university, Daniel aims to become a church pastor. Daniel has a great interest in studying different religions and has had the opportunity to visit different churches and religious sites in Bali. He hopes that someday he will have the opportunity to work in Indonesia.

Matthew has been teaching secondary level Indonesian, Maths and Humanities for six years and is currently the Senior Indonesian Teacher and Head of LOTE at Williamstown High School in Melbourne. Commencing Indonesian in Year 8, Matthew quickly became fascinated with how the language works as a morphological system of rules, and with the gentle encouragement of his early teachers, Matthew was able to explore his potential with success in state-wide Indonesian speaking and writing competitions.

At an undergraduate level, Matthew studied Arts/Law before undertaking an Honours Degree in Indonesian under the guidance of Yacinta Kurniasih, whom he attributes as the greatest influence on his language learning journey. Once postgraduate study options approached, Matthew spent two months volunteering as an English Teacher to schoolchildren in Bali before completing his Master of Teaching at the University of Melbourne in 2016.

Having first-hand experience himself, Matthew hopes that his students will also realise the self-empowering and interpersonally fulfilling nature of language learning to build genuine human connections. Crossing over to his professional career, Matthew has worked hard to maintain and facilitate Williamstown High School’s longstanding relationship with SMP Labschool Kebayoran in Jakarta, leading two overseas study trips and coordinating two other reciprocal visits. Whilst his recent visits to Indonesia have been professional in nature, Matthew hopes to be able to visit Indonesia again soon and explore the islands of Flores, Raja Ampat and Sulawesi with his wife.

Jake has done lots of interesting things in Indonesia. He has visited an active volcano, learned how to surf and welcomed 1500 guests to a traditional wedding.
